Waynoka Depot Receives Transportation Funds
The Oklahoma Department of Transportation has announced that the Transportation Commission has approved funding for 30 transportation enhancement projects totaling $17,315.694.12. The two projects in District 6, headquartered in Buffalo, are the Waynoka Depot and sidewalking for the City of Guymon, approved for $400,000 each. Enhancement funds are dedicated funding for community improvement projects, such as sidewalks, streetscapes, bicycle paths, and historic preservation. More than 60 applications were reviewed.
The Waynoka project is sponsored by the City of Waynoka and is owned by the Waynoka Historical Society. The grants are based on an 80/20 match, which requires the Society to provide 20% of the cost, which is $100,000.
The first enhancement funding received by the Waynoka Historical Societey was granted in 1995. Those funds totally restored the Harvey House, removed paint from the Santa Fe Depot, and repaired the tile roof on the depot at a cost of about $1,300,000. Matching funds were provided by the Department of Energy, Sarkeys Foundation, Share Trust, Woods County Economic Development Committee, First State Bank, and many individual donors.
The most recent transportation enhancement funds restored the windows and doors on the Santa Fe Depot. Chesapeake Energy and other donors provided the matching funds.Other restoration work, sidewalking and paving was funded by the Oklahoma Centennial Commission and the Oklahoma Legislature.
The current allocation, which is for fiscal years 2010-2011, will provide funds for the electrical work, plumbing, heat and air, and finish work for the depot, as well as architectural fees.
