WAYNOKA AIR-RAIL MUSEUM

The Section House

The Buffalo Northwestern Railway, completed on May 1, 1920, by the Santa Fe Railroad, was a community-driven project. The goal was to provide rail service to Buffalo, Oklahoma as well as the communities between Waynoka and Buffalo. Several towns were established on the route to provide water for the steam engines and homes for the section workers who maintained the rail line. The rail line operated regularly for almost 63 years until the derailment of a wheat train on July 3, 1983, at which time the line was officially abandoned and was not rebuilt.

This four-room section foreman’s house was one of seven section houses which the railroad built. The house, which was located in Edith, a townsite NW of Freedom, OK was donated by Wayne and Lillian Hodgson of Freedom, OK. Restora-tion was completed on site by Dr. Milt and Becky Lehr of Alva before the structure was moved in 2006 to Bixler Corner in Waynoka. Charles Morton Share Trust of Alva provided funds for the 40-mile move.
