WAYNOKA AIR-RAIL MUSEUM

The Ice Plant

The Waynoka Ice Plant was said to be the nation’s largest.  The plant  was built by the Railways Ice Company and provided ice for refrigerator cars that hauled perishables on the railroad’s main line from Chicago to Los Angeles. Refrigeration cars had a compartment at each end for ice. Crews would kick 300-pound blocks of ice into these compart-ments. The plant produced 241 tons of ice daily. Crews worked 24 hours a day, which helped boost the local economy by providing many area men with jobs.

The plant burned to the ground in later years.
